On Monday January 20, 2014, 20 students from the Lexington area decided to answer that question by turning a day off into a day of action.
This past Monday marked both Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the National Day of Service. On this day hundreds of thousands of Americans gathered to serve and better their communities. For those who spent their day serving – THANK YOU!
This year, the International Book Project had two groups of world-changers stop by our warehouse. Students from UK’s CATalyst Coalition and the Rowan County Y-Club showed up, painted, packed boxes and even picked up a broom or two to show that it doesn’t take a large crowd to make an impact. We thank you and our warehouse thanks you!
The CATalyst coalition is a student group at the University of Kentucky that supports diversity and social justice. This group of students served by helping us sort and pack books to send in a sea container to Kosovo as well as helped organize the warehouse. The Rowan County Y-club, which consists mostly of students from the Rowan County Senior high School, volunteered by painting, cleaning our facility, organizing and alphabetizing books in our book store, and sorting and packing books to send in a sea container to Kosovo.
Their energy and positive attitudes made the day fun and refreshing, exactly what a National Day of Service should be! It is people like them that become leaders and inspire others to make a difference in their communities and in the world as a whole.
