International Book Project (IBP) is proud to announce the fifth anniversary of Jake’s Birthday Book Drive in memory of Lexington’s Third District Council representative, Jake Gibbs. The drive, created by Anita Courtney to honor her husband (whose personal motto was “Always bring a book”) has garnered over 20,000 book donations since its inception!
Jake Gibbs was a civic leader, educator, environmentalist, activist and a much-loved member of the Lexington community. He touched many lives by teaching history and logic at the Bluegrass Community College, serving as Lexington’s 3rd District Council Member, co-founding Trees Lexington! and as owner of Alfalfa restaurant. Jake was an avid reader and believed – like IBP – that books change lives. The work of International Book Project was near and dear to his heart.
Books gathered from this drive will benefit IBP’s local programs, like Books in the Bluegrass – which provides at home libraries for the families of Habitat for Humanity, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, and others – as well as our international shipping partners.
This year, we are focusing on gathering K – 8th nonfiction for a 40 foot container of books being shipped to Ethiopia. We will also glad accept gently used children’s fiction, text books, medical books, and adult
fiction and nonfiction.
Donations may be dropped off at International Book Project’s warehouse from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday, March 24th – Friday, March 28th . Additionally, our partners West Sixth Brewing and Wild Lab
will also accept donations during these dates!
On March 28th, bring a donation of books and get a BOGO coupon for IBP’s bookstore!
